OBITUARY Nina Monahan October 13, 1930 – October 13, 2018 Play Tribute Movie Sparta, NJ —Nina J. Monahan, 88 passed away Saturday, October 13, 2018. She was born on October 13, 1930, in Jackson Heights, Queens in New York City to Carmine and Antonina (Badami) DiGiacomo. Nina was raised in New York City and graduated from All Saints Commercial High School in 1948. After high school, she met the love of her life, Thomas J. Monahan. Nina and Tom married on June 8, 1952. As a young couple they lived in New York where they started a family while Tom served in the US Navy. In 1966 they moved their family to Sleepy Hollow, IL just northwest of Chicago and then back east in 1975 to Branford, CT. After the loss of her husband in 1987, Nina continued to reside in CT for over a decade, until relocating to Montague, NJ in 1998. She resided in Montague until 2013 when she required the help of an assisted living facility in Wayne, NJ. Nina took great interest in learning new things, including obtaining her real estate license and then honing her skills at contract bridge. While competing at contract bridge nationally over the years, Nina attained the level of Gold Life Master. She belonged to various clubs and organizations and loved to travel, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family, whom she adored. Nina is survived by her three loving sons John (Debbie) of Sparta, NJ, Peter of Alpharetta, GA and Thomas of Albuquerque NM. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren: Christopher (Kelly), Ryan, Brendan, Kailey, Shannon and Kyle Monahan, as well as her sister Bertha Stiso of Long Island and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband Tom and her parents, Nina was predeceased by her sister Jessie Cafferata. At the time of her passing, Nina was valiantly fighting the impact of Alzheimer’s disease. A memorial celebration of this amazing, loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend and a life well-lived will be held on November 2, 2018 from 3-7PM at Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main St. Sparta NJ 07871. A prayer service will take place at 6PM. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, that donations in Nina’s memory be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation (alzfdn.org/support-us/donate/).
