Thalia Lynn Wetzel, 80, of Charleston, Illinois, was called to her heavenly home by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday, October 30, 2018, surrounded by family in the comfort of her home. Born October 9, 1938, in Petersburg, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Leo and Maude (Sharp) Brandenburg. She graduated from Mattoon High School in 1956 and attended Southern Methodist University the following year. She remained a devout Lutheran and active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church up until the time of her passing. The joy of her life was that of being a farmer’s wife. She delighted in her call to motherhood; raising their four children on the farm was her greatest accomplishment. In December 1983, she began working in the Student Life Office at Eastern Illinois University where she had the unique privilege of being a second Mom to hundreds of students during her 25-year career at EIU. She enjoyed traveling to Florida each winter with her husband, children, and grandchildren. This past summer she and Paul took the “trip of a lifetime” with their girls, visiting 21 National Parks throughout the western United States. Her loving husband, Paul, survives her along with her four children: Brad (Christine) Wetzel, Laurel (Chuck) Fuqua, Brian (Jennifer) Wetzel, and Heather Leichty. Nine grandchildren also survive: Kristopher Clark, Abby Wetzel, Alex Fuqua, Carlie (Jared) Barth, James Leichty, Molly Leichty, Karsyn Wetzel, Jack Wetzel, and Nick Wetzel. Along with Thalia’s parents, her sister Joan Blair preceded her in death. Visitation will be held Thursday, November 1, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Schilling Funeral Home, 1301 Charleston Ave, Mattoon, IL 61938. Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 2, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 8975 E County Road 1200N, Mattoon, IL, with Pastor Paul Hopkins officiating. Burial will follow immediately after at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 1701 DeWitt Ave, Mattoon, IL. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John’s Lutheran School, 200 Charleston Ave, Mattoon, IL 61938.
