Obituary for Thomas J. Smith, Sr. Thomas J. Smith Sr., 64, also known as Tom or Big Tom, passed away Sunday, August 05, 2018, at Staten Island Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Tom is survived by his wife, Gerri, of 41 years. They moved from Brooklyn to Staten Island in 1980, where they raised their two children Thomas Jr. and Michael. Tom worked for Brooklyn Union Gas for 34 years until he retired from the company in 2006. Since then, he has been working for PSE&G as a Supervising Training Specialist. He was the true definition of a family man. One of his passions was watching and coaching his sons in both baseball and soccer. He was an avid Mets fan and enjoyed hunting. He was an active member of both Holy Child and St. Clare Parishes. Tom was loved by everyone he met. Besides being a true family man, Tom was also known for having a great sense of humor, whose laugh was contagious. He was truly greater than life. Tom is survived by his wife Gerri, his sons Thomas (Carmen) and Michael (Christine), his granddaughter Sofia Hope and many family members and friends. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd, Staten Island, New York. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 9:45 am on Wednesday, St. Clare’s Church. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
