Obituary of Stanley Wachowski GOUVERNEUR – Stanley “Steve” L. Wachowski, age 98, passed away on August 15, 2018 at his daughter’s home under the care of his family and hospice. There will be a graveside service held in the New St. James Cemetery on Monday, August 20, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are with French Funeral Home in Gouverneur. Steve was born on August 24, 1919 in Polonia, Manitoba, Canada to the late Leo and Stella (Nowak) Wachowski. He attended school in Buffalo and served in the United States Army from April 30, 1943 until his honorable discharge on October 9, 1943. He married Sophie M. Winkoski on September 25, 1940 at the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Church in Buffalo. The couple lived in Buffalo until moving to Gouverneur in 2002 to be near their daughter and grandchildren. Sophie passed away on September 28, 2002. Mr. Wachowski worked for Kleinhans Clothiers in Buffalo for 50 years as a Master Fitter before his retirement in 1989. He had been a member of the Tailors Union where he had served as the Shop Steward. Steve was an independent and intelligent man. He loved reading books, National Geographic, and Consumer Reports to gain knowledge and insight. He was very proud of maintaining his home and cars himself, rebuilding engines, trimming shrubs, maintaining a weed-free yard, and keeping his driveway spotless. He enjoyed gardening, walking in the woods, and had a vocal love/hate relationship with the Yankees and Buffalo Bills. His survivors include his two daughters, Evelyn Becker of Louisville, KY, Adrianne Wachowski of Gouverneur; a brother, Henry Wachowski; 4 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren with one more on the way. In addition to his parents and his wife, Steve is predeceased by two brothers, Anthony and William Wachowski.
