Robert “Pops” Smelcer Sr., 81, of North Ridgeville, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, August 16, 2018. Robert was born in Newport, Tennessee on June 30, 1937. He resided in North Ridgeville for the past 20 years. Robert loved racing stock cars (#36), and spent many years racing all over northeast Ohio. He was also a great mechanic and did all the engine work on his stock car. Along with being mechanically gifted Robert could fix anything and often scoured parts to fix up all kinds of household goods and appliances. He enjoyed life and spending time with his family. Robert is survived by his wife of 48-1/2 years, Mary (nee Katlick); two daughters, Sandra Ferrio (Mike) and Brenda Pettry (Mike); two sons, Randall Smelcer (Linda) and Keith Smelcer (Veronica); seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; three sisters; three brothers and many nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by one son, Robert “BJ’ Smelcer Jr, his parents Vinia and John “Ed” Smelcer; one sister and one brother. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 23, 2018 from 4-8pm at Liston Funeral Home, 36403 Center Ridge Rd. (at Stoney Ridge Rd.), North Ridgeville. The funeral will take place on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Kristen Caldwell will officiate. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Avon.
