Richard Alan Wyckoff 2018

OBITUARY Richard Alan Wyckoff April 25, 1946 – July 27, 2018 Richard A. Wyckoff was born April 25, 1946, in Pittsburgh, PA. His family moved to Charleston, WV, where he lived as a child. He obtained his undergraduate education at the University of Charleston and his advanced education at Temple University in Philadelphia and at the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned his doctorate. Rick was a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice from 1969 to 2005 in Pittsburgh. He and his wife Linda then moved to the Seattle area, where he continued in private practice until a short time before his death. He specialized for many years in adult and geriatric behavioral medicine, dementia care and pain management. From 1998 to 2004, he was grant-funded in Pennsylvania to teach behavioral alternatives to psychoactive medication in long term care. He co-authored three books with his wife on behavior management. More recently he had developed a passionate interest in the diagnosis and nutritional treatment of biochemical imbalances that cause mental health concerns. He was a frequent and popular speaker on this topic, and consequently many individuals who preferred a non-pharmacologic approach to treatment sought him out for guidance. Rick was a warm and friendly psychologist who connected easily with his patients and quickly conveyed that he was “in the moment” with them, fully grasping their particular concerns. He had a strong sense of humor about himself and others, and it was not uncommon for patients to be laughing with him by the end of a session. He had a very tender heart for his family. He adored his wife Linda and was enormously proud of his daughters and their husbands and especially his grandchildren, all of whom had a special place in his heart. Rick’s warmth and humor carried with him on his own journey through poor health. He had had heart disease for a number of years and called himself a “frequent flyer” in the hospital. He endeared himself to those who cared for him during his many hospitalizations and remained positive and forward thinking even on the morning of his passing. He had earlier joked with his attending nurse about being a “smart ass,” and she later remarked that he had gone out laughing and joking and being a smart ass. He went into cardiac arrest on July 27th and passed away within a few minutes. Rick is survived by his wife Linda, to whom he had been married for 31 years, his daughters Anna Eisenberg (Greg), Dana Haveson (Ryan), and Michelle Mitchell (Denny), his sister Lynn Wyckoff, his brother Steve Wyckoff, and seven grandchildren, Isabel and Elijah Eisenberg, Abigail and Leah Haveson, and Casey, Tess and Luke Mitchell. A friends and family memorial service, followed by a light lunch, will be held on Saturday, August 11, beginning at 10:00 am in the Acacia Memorial Chapel at 14951 Bothell Way NE, Shoreline, WA 98155.
