Obituary for LaVada Poindexter Beard LaVada Baucom Poindexter Beard passed away at the age of 87 on August 22, 2018 in the peace and quiet of her home and the presence of her family. She is survived by her five children: Vonda Smith and husband Terry of Dudley, Rhonda Beard and husband Bobby of Clyde, LaJuanda Smoot of Dudley, Tonya Moore and husband Randy of Elmdale, Jay Don Poindexter and wife Debora of Merkel; a sister Mary Hagler of Midlothian, and a brother Jack Baucom and wife Karen of San Angelo; 15 grandchildren: Travis Smith, Teena Jaworski, Lynnae Well, Kayla Zeigler, LaTrisha Payne, Rusty Smoot, Doug Smoot, April Hayhurst, Chris Smoot, Dusty Moore, Randa Drake, Chance Alewine, Alissa Schumacher, Trasa Webber, and Jaylee Poindexter; 27 great-grandkids; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceeded in death by her parents Arvin and Della Baucom, her brothers Frank and Marvin Baucom, a sister Bobbie Carter, husband J.H. Poindexter, husband Ulys Beard, son-in-law Johnny Smoot, and a great-granddaughter Gracelynn Well. LaVada was born to Arvin and Della Baucom on November 16, 1930 in Burkett. She graduated from Coleman High School in 1948 and attended Hardin Simmons University. She married J.H. Poindexter on October 19, 1951 in Baird. They raised and loved their five children together for over 55 years until his death in 2007. On May 8, 2008 she married Ulys Beard in Clyde. For 40 years LaVada served people with the Callahan County Clerks Office, Continental Telephone, Olney Savings, and Hendrick Medical Center. She volunteered for Hospice and Care Ministries in Abilene. She was a member of the church of Christ since 1951, most recently in Merkel. She loved people, talking with them, and encouraging them. She shared Christ’s love as she encouraged and brought others to faith in Christ, wherever she was, from West Texas to West Africa. Jesus Christ was the love of her life! Visitation will be 5–7 p.m. Thursday, August 23 at Starbuck Funeral Home, 201 Edwards, in Merkel. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Friday, August 24, 2018 at the Merkel church of Christ, 700 Ash, in Merkel. Jay Don Poindexter, her son, will officiate the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Merkel Church of Christ to help youth attend Camp Blue Haven.
