OBITUARY Hubert FLOMENHOFT Passed away on August 3, 2018 Palm Beach Gardens – Hubert Ivan (Hugh) Flomenhoft, 93, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, formerly of Lexington, MA, died peacefully at home on August 3, 2018. He leaves behind his adored wife of 69 years, Lorelei (Lori) Flomenhoft. He was a devoted father to the late Debbra Flomenhoft of Lexington, MA, Gary Flomenhoft of Brisbane, Australia and Eastham, MA, and Sheryl Ceriani and her husband Peter of Wellesley, MA. He was also a loving grandfather (Papa) of Nicole Ceriani and uncle to a large extended family. Hugh was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA and graduated from Central High School in Philadelphia. He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY where he received a Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he received a Master of Science degree. Hugh continued to be active as an alumnus of MIT serving as class secretary until last year when he attended his 70th class reunion. In 1961, he moved his wife and three young children to Zurich, Switzerland where he studied at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) and received his Doctor of Science. Hugh served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Hugh worked as an aeronautical engineer for his entire career, including managing the missile development for the PATRIOT missile system at the Raytheon Company. He was an Associate Fellow of the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and had been a member for over 70 years. During these years, Hugh also competed as a member of the New England Masters Swim Club and was in the top 10 in his age group. After retiring to Florida, Hugh volunteered as a math tutor for high school students, enjoyed playing tennis, and served on the boards of his property association as well as the North County Democratic Club. He had a hobby of writing, and he published The Revolution in Structural Dynamics, donating the proceeds to a special memorial fund at MIT. He also authored another wonderful limited-edition book, Papa’s Poems. A graveside service will be held at the Westview Cemetery, 520 Bedford St, Lexington, MA on Monday, August 6, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation at the home of Sheryl and Peter Ceriani to follow. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. A gathering to remember Hugh will also be held at a later date at his residence in Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor may be made to the Democratic candidate of your choice to support a Blue Wave, or the charity of your choice.
