Obituary for Harold E Schwartz Harold E. Schwartz, 81, died at his home in Pawleys Island on Saturday, July 28th. He was born in Washington, D.C., son of the late Harold and Beatrice Thatch Schwartz. Hal attended Lycee Yersin, Dalat Vietnam and graduated from Ojai Preparatory School, Ojai, Calif. He earned a BA and MA in Public Administration at University of Maryland. A graduate of the Army Language School, Monterey, Calif., he was assigned to the 513th Military Intelligence in Berlin, Germany where he served as a Russian/French Interpreter. He participated in the Powers/Abel prisoner exchange on the Glienicke Bridge and the 1961 Tank Incident at Friedrich Strasse. He was later transferred to Allied Staff in the British Sector. His novel, Outpost Berlin was based on his experiences in Berlin. Briefly stationed at Fort Belvoir, Va., he was assigned to the 5th Special Forces in Nha Trang, Vietnam where he was wounded on Dec. 31, 1965. He returned to civilian life in 1966. He was an Administrator and Professor at Mansfield University, Mansfield, Pa. Upon retirement he moved to Pawleys Island. He is survived by his wife, Christine, three sons, Karl, Atlanta, Ga., Kevin, Pine Beach, N.J., Eric, Atlanta, Ga. and daughter, Aimee (Lee); three grandchildren, Michael, Katie and Kayli; a brother, Donald, Chicago, Ill. He was predeceased by a brother, James. He was an avid chess player, tennis player, reader and traveler. He was an active member of Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church and a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. Family will receive friends an hour before the service in the Church Narthax. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Precious Blood Catholic Church on Friday, August 3rd at 11:00 a.m. Innurment following in the church columbarium; In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Father Pat’s Kitchen or Food for the Poor.
