Obituary of Frances Smart Frances A. Smart of Middletown, a retired nurse and longtime resident of the area, passed away on Monday August 13, 2018 in Wayne, N.J. She was 96. The daughter of the late Hanford and Fannie Garrison DeGroat, she was born on March 20, 1922 in Sus, N.J. She was a member of the St. John’s AME Zion Church in Middletown. The National League of Nursing . The Golden Age Seniors in Middletown. She was the widow of William “Duke” Smart. Survivors include her son Robert Kevin Smart and his companion Rose Aviles of Hackensack, N.J. Her sister Ida Smith of Middletown. Her grandchildren Jerome Kenneth Smart and his wife Francine Smart; Robert William Smart and Desiree Frances Smart. Her great-grandchildren Davon Kendell Smart, Dehstin Smart, Emaree Ramseur, Amber Fischer, Janaya Aviles, Sarai Townes, Leiyani Townes and Tatiyana Townes. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Cleopatric Smart and a host of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Hayward Garrison, Hanford DeGroat, Ralph DeGroat, Jonah DeGroat, Calvin DeGroat and Richard DeGroat. Her sisters Margaret Banks and Doris Thompson. Visitation will be held on Saturday August 18, 2018 from 9:00 AM-10:00 AM followed by a Homegoing Service at 10 A.M. all being held at St. John’s AME Zion Church 103 East Ave. Middletown, N.Y. Burial will be in the Orange County Veterans Cemetery in Goshen, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s AME Zion Church.
