Obituary for Elaine Brown Whelton Elaine Brown Whelton passed away peacefully on August 25,2018. She is preceded in death by the love of her life and her husband of 61 years, Maurice “Paddy’ Whelton of Galveston , TX. She was born in Albany, NY to Lilyan Rita Burton and James Morgan Brown on June 14, 1934. She graduated (with a medical technology degree) from Union College in NY. As she raised her 5 children, she continued to work as a senior manager in the Blood Bank of New Orleans, LA. She also took on an additional career as a gymnastics judge since she was traveling the country with her 3 daughters. She always encouraged her children to seek their dreams and God will provide. She had insatiable love for books/reading and knitting. Each of her grandchildren cherish a personal knitted hat and a special intricately handmade Christmas ornaments. After her 5 children were grown, she and Paddy went on an adventure of a lifetime; they purchased a 50 foot sail boat and sailed in the Caribbean for 5 years! Elaine’s biggest passion on these journeys was bringing the children of the islands books to read. She loved when they flocked to her boat when they realized she was arriving. After their sailing days they settled in League City, TX to remain close to the water and their sailboat but ultimately settled closer to family in Abita Springs, LA. Elaine was a devout Catholic and is survived by her 5 children – Michael Whelton, Greg Whelton, Denise W DeFranco, Diane W McCarthy and Bridget W Torregrosa; one sister Audrey B Hughes; 14 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Maurice, “Paddy” Whelton who she was married to for 61 years, her parents, and sister Phyllis B Corcoran and one son, Dennis Whelton. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral mass at 1:00PM on Thursday, August 30, 2018 at St. Jane de Chantal Church, 72040 Maple St., Abita Springs, LA. Visitation and reception prior to the mass in the Fellowship Hall starting at 11:00 AM. Graveside services will follow the mass at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens, 2260 W. 21st Ave. Covington, LA 70433. In lieu of flowers, donations to your own church or to St. Jane de Chantal Catholic Church in Abita Springs, LA may be made in memory of Elaine Whelton.
