Dennis L. Gerber, 65, of Redfield, SD, passed away on Monday, August 20, 2018 at Redfield Care and Rehabilitation Center. It was his wish for direct cremation with no memorial service. Hyke Funeral Home of Redfield has been entrusted with arrangements (www.hykefuneralhome.com). Dennis was born September 9, 1952 in Bismarck, ND to Arthur and Betty (Dubois) Gerber. He was raised and educated in Napoleon, ND. Following his high school graduation, Dennis joined the U.S. Army and served as a door gunner in Vietnam. After his time of service, he moved back home to work on the farm. Later, Dennis worked on the Burlington Northern Railroad in Bismarck, a body shop in Edgeley, ND and in the early 1980’s he moved his family to Turton, SD where he worked at the elevator. A few years later, they settled in Redfield when Dennis was employed by the South Dakota Developmental Center. Dennis retired after being hurt on the job and continued to live in Redfield until his death. Dennis’ hobbies included fishing, hunting, camping, riding his Can-Am Spider and just being outdoors. He especially loved spending time with his family. Dennis is survived by his daughter Amanda (Keith) Wittrock of Watertown, SD and their children Ashley, Brandon and Zack; as well as his son and grandson, Dennis, Jr. and Kevin, respectively, both of Redfield; his son Shawn’s children: Kayla Gerber and Chase Gerber; brother, Jesse Gerber of Redfield; and a sister, Rita (Dave) Blocker of Mohall, ND; and numerous nephews and nieces. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Shawn Gerber; two brothers: Kevin and Mike; and two nephews.
