Deacon Gary Roland Christopher Krueger September 1 1941 July 23 2018

Obituary for Deacon Gary Roland Christopher Krueger Deacon Gary Roland Christopher Krueger, age 76, of Marine City, passed away July 23, 2018. He was born September 1, 1941 to the late Harold and Dorothy (Krupp) Krueger. Gary attended Denby High School and joined the United States Army immediately after graduation. Gary served in Korea during the cold war. He was honorably discharged in 1963. While Gary was in service he took classes, became a Catholic and took the name Christopher as his Baptismal name. In 1964 he was President of the Assumptionaires Young Adult Club. Gary proposed to his wife, Margaret (Peggy Kroetsch), on their first date and they were married on February 6, 1965 at Nativity of Our Lord Church in Detroit. They celebrated their 50th anniversary at that church in February of 2015. He received his Associate Degree in General Studies from Macomb Community College in 1974. When Gary was Baptized in the Lutheran faith, as a baby, Pastor Wilson told his grandmother that he was going to be a minister. Of course Grand Krupp was a bit upset when he became Catholic, but figured that maybe he would become a priest. Then he got married, so priest was not possible. But, God had a plan and called Gary to the Deaconate Program. Grandma Krupp was alive to see him become a “minister” fulfilling the prophecy of Pastor Wilson. Gary attended the Episcopal School of Theology during a mutual study program with Sacred Heart Seminary. He was ordained to the Deaconate in 1974 at St. Martin of Tours in Detroit after receiving a special dispensation from the Vatican, because he was under age. Deacon Gary served his ministry at St. Martin of Tours, Detroit; St. Peter, Harper Woods; St. Ephrem, Sterling Heights; St. Mary, New Baltimore and for over 20 years at Holy Cross, Marine City, where he was currently Deacon Emeritus. Gary taught at Notre Dame High School in Harper Woods and loved interacting with the boys. He received a Bachelor of Theology from St. Mary, Orchard Lake in 1982. A musician (guitar, trumpet, base, keyboard) all of his life, at age 50 he decided he wanted to play the bagpipes. He competed and ribboned in individual and with the Red thistle, Windsor Police and Cabar Feidh Pipe bands. Gary was passionate in everything he did. Besides his family and friends, he loved learning music, the Deaconate and teaching and talking about his faith. At age 74 Gary received an Associate Degree in Legal Studies from Baker College to a standing ovation from the entire assembly. As he was the oldest in that gradation class. A special joy was playing St. Nicholas or Father Christmas at the children’s Mass at Holy Cross and the Marine City Civic Women’s Club Christmas home tour. As a couple Gary and Peggy were active in Marriage Encounter for 43 years. He is a member of the Marine City Knights of Columbus Council #856 and 4th Degree Knight with the Richmond Assembly #480. Deacon Gary was especially proud of his position as Chaplain of St. Agatha Circle #419. He also worked in all phases of real estate and was a member of the VFW.
