David William Cummins 1953 2018

Obituary for David Cummins David was born March 6, 1953 in Marshall, Michigan to Phillip and Joannet (Conley) Cummins. He grew up in Battle Creek, attended Springfield elementary school and graduated from Lakeview High School in 1971. As the youngest son, he seemed to get away with everything due to his quick wit and sly smile. In the early 70s he helped create what many have called the first Frisbee Golf course in Battle Creek on the grounds of Kellogg Community College. He was a master at the game and a tournament champion. He was also a musician with natural talent as a guitar player and drummer and occasionally played with area bands. He was known by many from his years working for his older brother Bob at Battle Creek’s first premier rock music store, Choker Records, located in the heart of downtown in the 1970s. Many more may remember him for his 30 years working at the other family business, Mix Hardware, with his sister Mary and her husband Tim, where he helped rebuild the business after it burned down in 2008. He retired this June after being diagnosed with cancer. In 1992 he married Margo Fry and together they lived in the smallest house ever built until they eventually made their home on beautiful Lake McGinnis in Climax, Michigan. David enjoyed living the country life. They often kayaked the lake, walked Cold Brook Park and biked the village. His parents and his older brother Robert preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Margo, his brother Thomas, of Grand Rapids, sister Mary (Tim) Mix of Battle Creek, niece Alexa Cummins of New York and nephew Michael Stevens of Battle Creek. A gathering of friends and family will be held at the Baxter Funeral & Cremation Service, 375 W. Dickman Road, on Thursday, August 30, 2018, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to S.A.F.E. Place, a domestic violence shelter in Battle Creek where Margo has spent 23 years helping those in immediate need.
