Obituary for Carlton Hughes Carlton E. Hughes October 2, 1931 – August 19, 2018 Carlton E. Hughes of Wormleysburg, PA and formerly of Stuart, FL passed away peacefully on Sunday August 19, 2018 at the age of 86 after a brief illness. He was born on October 2, 1931, the son of the late Carlton and Marie Hughes of Pittsburgh, PA. Raised in Pittsburgh, Carlton graduated from Mount Lebanon High School and Duquesne University. Additionally, he attended Duquesne Law School. During the Korean War, he served in the United States Air Force. In 1955, Carlton married his high school sweetheart, who became his loving wife of 62 years, Shirley Larson Hughes, who survives him. Initially employed in the banking industry as a security analyst, he formed C. E. Hughes and Company providing security analysis services for banks throughout the Commonwealth. In 1961, he joined National Central Bank in Harrisburg to head their trust department. After a successful banking career, he purchased Stewart Equipment Co. and A. R. Amos Equipment Co. and merged the two to form Stewart-Amos Equipment Co. in 1971. In 1974, with two associates, he purchased Goetze Welding Co. and changed the name to Stewart-Amos Steel Co. He served as chairman of both companies until his retirement. Respected for his business acumen, Carlton served on the board of directors of Hamilton Bank and successor institutions Philadelphia National Bank, CoreStates Bank and First Union Bank. He also served on the boards of IREX Corporation, SPI Corporation, Arnold Industries, New Penn Trucking and Pennsylvania Flame Hardening Corp. Carlton believed in making the world a better place by improving the lives of those around him. He supported numerous community organizations. Additionally, he served as treasurer and board member of the United Way of the Capital Region, board member of Goodwill Industries, The Harrisburg Foundation, Polyclinic Hospital and Pinnacle Health Systems. A committed family man and loyal friend, Carlton enjoyed traveling with his wife, family and friends. He truly enjoyed golfing and the comradery as evidenced by his past memberships at Shanopin, Seaview, Harrisburg, Quail Ridge, Willoughby and West Shore Country Clubs. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter Carlyn Chulick and husband Frank of Camp Hill, PA, two grandsons, Carlton Chulick of Camp Hill and Travis Chulick and wife Nicole of Houston, TX and great-granddaughters, Carolyne Jane and Reagan Olivia. Funeral services will be at 12 noon on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1610 Carlisle Road, Camp Hill, PA. Viewing will be from 10:30 am until the time of the service. Interment will be at Rolling Green Cemetery, 1811 Carlisle Road, Camp Hill, PA with a reception to follow at West Shore Country Club, Camp Hill PA. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Myers-Harner Funeral & Cremation Services, Camp Hill. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made to support the research of Dr. Stephen Yang through the Carlton and Shirley Hughes Fund for Geriatric Thoracic Surgery at Johns Hopkins Medicine.
