Obituary for Betty Ruth Martin Betty Ruth Martin, 94, died at Northview Care Center in Laurel, MS, August 14, 2018. A native and life-long resident of Laurel, she was born August 4, 1924, one of four daughters of Audrey Leigh and Minnie Millicent (Flynt) Martin. She was the granddaughter of James W. “Bud” and Harriet Allen (Davis) Martin, and Davis Jefferson and Easter Remillicent (Powell) Flynt. After graduating from George S. Gardiner High School, she began working in banking serving in various capacities at Commercial National Bank and later, Trustmark National Bank. She retired as a credit officer and assistant cashier in 1988 after 46 years. During her career, she was associated with various banking, civic, and social organizations, including being a member and secretary of Credit Professionals, and board member and secretary of the Y.W.C.A. She also was a member of the Nahoula Chapter of the Mississippi State Society, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.), where she served as regent and made major contributions to the 100th anniversary history of that D.A.R. Chapter. She was a member of Heritage Baptist Church, formerly Second Avenue Baptist Church, where she served in many offices and compiled and wrote a history of the latter church published in 1983. Ms. Martin was predeceased by her three sisters and their husbands: Marie Martin Graham (B.L. Graham); Bonnie Martin Derrow (Leonard W. Derrow, Sr.); and Joyce Martin Freeman (William L. Freeman). She is survived by one niece and three nephews: Janis Graham Dowe (Joe), of Tylertown, Mississippi; L. William “Bill” Derrow, of Washington, D.C.; William Rodney “Rod” Freeman (Betty Lynn), of Jackson; and David Keith Freeman (Carla), of Daphne, Alabama. She is also survived by numerous grand nieces and nephews, and great-grand nieces and nephews. Though Betty was not blessed with children, she treated her niece and nephews as her own. In addition, she lovingly regarded their children as her grandchildren. For this we were all richly blessed. She was affectionately called by all as “Aunt B” or “B”. Ms. Martin will be interred August 18, 2018, in Hickory Grove Cemetery, in Laurel. A private, graveside service will be conducted. Memory Chapel of Laurel is handling the arrangements.
