OBITUARY Alzbeta “Betty” Janowski February 24, 1922 – August 20, 2018 Alzbeta “Betty” Janowski, age 96, of Newburgh, IN, passed away Monday, August 20, 2018 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital surrounded by family. Betty was born February 24, 1922 in Handlova, Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia). She came to the United States at age 16 on the SS Normandy, leaving her family behind. She met her uncle in New York and he took her to live in Chicago. Betty taught herself the English language while working as a nanny in Chicago. She worked at US Steel South Works during WWII, then at RR Donnelly, where she met her husband. Later, she worked at American Lock in Crete, IL. In retirement. Betty volunteered at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer and River Point Healthcare. She was a member of Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Evansville, IN, and previously a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Matteson, IL. Betty was a Cub Scout Den leader and a lifelong Cubs fan, she was thrilled when they won the 2016 World Series. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, in 2001 after 42 years of marriage. She is survived by her sons, John Janowski (Janet) of St. Joseph MI, Dr. Robert Janowski (Beth) of Newburgh, IN; and grandchildren, Katherine and Matthew Janowski, Kathleen and Michael Arnold. Friends may visit from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at Alexander Newburgh Chapel with a prayer service to follow.
