Obituary for William “Bill” Coughlin Bill Coughlin, a native of Saint Augustine, died on June 24, 2018 at the age of 90. Bill served in the U.S. Navy and was a graduate of The Citadel in Charleston, SC. He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding, where he was credited with numerous innovations that facilitated the construction of U.S. Navy vessels. He is predeceased by his two eldest sons, Bill, Jr. and John. He is survived by Mary Coughlin, his wife of 67 years, and five children: Mary Anne, Martha, Rose, Tom and Tricia, fifteen grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Bill loved fishing, woodworking and reading and fondly remembered an idyllic childhood in Saint Augustine. “Home is the sailor, home from the sea” -R.L. Stevenson.
