Dr. Catherine Tjoei Eng Njo, 95, of Shelton passed away peacefully Saturday (May 26, 2018) at home surrounded by her loving family. Dr. Njo was born May 22, 1923 in Bengkulu, Sumatra, Indonesia. She came from a large family as one of the youngest of 9 siblings. She was a widow of Dr. Soen Hien Njo, deceased in 2008. Dr. Njo was graduate of the University of Indonesia (UI) Medical School in Jakarta in 1952. She was a researcher at UI in tropical parasitology, mycology, and clinical pathology from 1953 to 1968. For a period of time, she did scientific research at Tulane University in New Orleans, traveling with her husband who worked in clinical medicine. Both returned to Jakarta with daughter Angela in 1960. She and her husband immigrated to the US with their children in 1968. She did medical residency in Worcester General Hospital, MA before moving to Pennsylvania with her family where she worked at Nazareth Hospital and JFK Memorial Hospital in Philadelphia. She was a longtime resident of Maple Glen, PA, having raised her children and later retiring there. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend who embraced life. Her faith and family were her strength and her passion. She loved all kinds of cooking (especially Indonesian dishes) and baking. She was a lifelong avid reader and fan of classical music. She found comfort in playing the piano in her early and mid-life along with chess playing with her husband and children. Surviving are daughter, Bernadette Njo-Schmidt, and her two children Fabian and Julia; son Peter, son Paul; son Lucas and his wife Lori, and their two children, Andrew and Jade; daughter Angela and her two children, Sean and Julie; and son Thomas. She was preceded in death by her daughter Caroline. Services will be private.
