Shirley Frances Briner 1936 2018

Obituary for Shirley Briner Shirley Frances Briner, known to many as ‘Grandma Shirley’ passed away peacefully on June 25th, 2018. She was born in Glendive Montana in 1936 to Garfield and Frances Catherine Trulock. She later married Donald Lewis Briner in 1958 and moved to Billings, Montana. Shirley was a stay at home mom until 1975 when she began her career at Lockwood Schools as a cook and later became the manager of the food service program, a perfect job as it combined two of her great joys in life- children and cooking. Grandma Shirley often reminded her family and friends of her love for them through her baking and cooking. Her Grandchildren remember her watching them when they were sick, covered in blankets and being offered a warm grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup. While our hearts will miss her comfort food, our waistlines will not. Fortunately, upon her retirement in 2008, she published ‘Grandma Shirley’s Cookbook’, a collection of all of her beloved recipes which is now a staple in many kitchens across Billings. She enjoyed gardening, playing pinochle, spending time with her family and trying new recipes. She loved teaching children Sunday school at Faith Chapel, where she also volunteered washing the toys after the weekend services. She also volunteered in the kitchen at the Senior Center. Although Shirley’s softhearted and thoughtful nature has no doubt cheered many people’s day, her family was also entertained by her spunky and headstrong disposition. She often made her way to the YMCA, long after her body (and doctor) suggested she dial down her workouts, so she could visit with her friends and go for a walk. She spent her last years at West Park Village’s Pearl Garden Memory Care where she was loved and well taken care of. Shirley is preceded in death by her husband Don and grandson AJ. She is survived by her daughters Pam (Rick) Damron, Bobbi (Al) Blain, and son Monty (Holly) Christensen, grandchildren Travis, Michelle, Erin, Bridger, Jared, Josh, Shawn, and Jonathan, great grandchildren Chloe, Hannah, Ryan, Irin, Adalyn, Amelia, Emma, Kiera, Elsie, Hazel and Wright. A viewing will be held on Thursday June 28th from 3-5pm at Smith Funeral Chapel West. A Funeral Service will be held at Faith Chapel (In the small chapel off Broadwater) on Friday June 29th at 11am with a luncheon to follow. Donations can be made in Shirley’s memory to the AJ Blain Foundation 421 Rimrock Rd Billings MT 59102 or online at ajblainfoundation.org.
