Obituary for Mona Hunter Mona Savage Hammond Hunter, 103, died June 17, 2018 in Orem, Utah, of causes incident to age. She was born October 8, 1914, to Van Ransler Savage and Gladys Whitehead in Salt Lake City, Utah—the fourth of twelve children. Mona attended Irving Jr. High School and Jordan High School in Salt Lake City. She married Opal Kneil Hammond on December 30, 1935, in the Salt Lake Temple. While raising seven children they lived in various locations: Metropolis, Wells, and Elko, Nevada; Billings, Miles City, and Sumatra, Montana; Deer Park, Florida; Nyssa, Oregon; and Fresno, Clovis, and Madera, California. She took voice lessons from Richard P. Condie, director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Following Opal’s death in 1967, Mona earned a nursing degree at Fresno City College and worked many years as a registered nurse. She served faithfully in the LDS Church and was a Christ-like person: constantly loving, caring, and serving. Mona married Alden Dean Hunter on October 17, 1970. They served missions in the Dallas Texas Temple, the Santiago Chile Temple, the Oakland California Temple, and the Family History Center in Salt Lake City. Dean died in 2004. Her greatest enjoyments were teaching seminary, horseback riding, golfing, swimming, hiking, traveling, cooking, reading, singing, quilt-making, BYU sports, and family gatherings. Mona is survived by her children Opal Gene Hammond (San Luis, AZ), Judith (Don) Carter (Provo, UT), Gilbert Devoe Hammond (Lynda) (Tulare, CA), Kathryn Ann (Luther) McLaughlin (Nampa, ID), Marcia (D. Kelly) Ogden (Provo, UT), Mona (Mark) Bailey (Edmonds, WA), and Douglas Kneil Hammond (Denise) (Parker, CO). Hunter children: Wayne (Kathie) (Clovis, CA); Roland (Rinda) (St. George, UT); David (Rosanna) (Bluffdale, UT); Brian [deceased] (Laurie) (Fresno, CA). From Mona’s seven children have come 48 grandchildren, 156 great-grandchildren, and 29 great-great-grandchildren; plus from the four Hunter step-sons 19 grandchildren and 53 great-grandchildren, making her current total posterity 316. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, June 23rd, at 11:00 am at the Edgemont 6th Ward, 4056 Timpview Drive, Provo, Utah, where a Viewing will be held prior from 9:00 to 10:30 am.
