Milton “Milt” McKeown was born on November 28, 1945 in Hendricks, Minnesota to the late Everett Boyd and Fern Elizabeth (Wiskur) McKeown. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic school from 1st-8th grade and graduated from Elkton High School in the Class of 1963. He then attended Dakota State College in Madison, South Dakota where he received his BA Degree in Industrial Arts with a minor in business. During this time, he was drafted into the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. He served his country honorably for two years until being discharged and returning to Heron Lake Schools. On July 27, 1974, Milt was united in marriage to Deborah Kay Lewis in Mankato. This marriage was blessed with one son, Brodie. Through the years, after leaving teaching, Milt worked for SATRA Belarus, Inc. as a service technician and then as a territory marketing manager for Hubbard Milling Company. In 1981, he began working for Blue Chip Feed until 1990 when he became the insurance agent at the Heron Lake State Bank. He retired in 2006. Milt was community minded, serving as an original board member of Heron Lake BioEnergy LLC. He was a member of the Community Club, helped build the community center in Heron Lake, was on the community scholarship committee, president of the nursing home board, and spent time on the Southwest Minnesota Workforce Council. He and Deb continued to live in Heron Lake until recently moving to Arnolds Park, Iowa. Milt was diagnosed with cancer several years ago and fought the disease courageously until passing away on Monday, June 11, 2018, at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake, Iowa at the age of 72 years. For the past nine years, Milt and Deb wintered in Bradenton, Florida. Milt also had many enjoyments in life which included motorcycling, golfing, following Brodie’s sports career, being on the pit crew when Brodie raced, camping, watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, Ford cars, and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren. Milt is survived by his wife of forty-three years, Deb McKeown of Arnolds Park, IA; one son, Brodie (Danielle) McKeown of Arnolds Park, IA and their children, Jax and Kenna; five siblings, Gary (Peggy) McKeown of Brookings, SD; Barb (Pete) Mersch of Sioux Falls, SD; Terry (Jeanine) McKeown of Brookings, SD; Jerry (Peg) McKeown of Callaway; Rick (Rea) McKeown of Brookings, SD; and many nieces and nephews. Milt is preceded in death by his parents.
