Joanne Lucille Miller 1930 2018

Obituary for Joanne Miller Joanne Lucille (Elwood) Miller, 88, died peacefully on June 16, 2018 at Hospice of Dayton. Born on January 29, 1930 in Flint, Michigan, she was predeceased by her beloved sister, Mary Margaret (Elwood) Hogan, her parents, Harry Jerald Elwood and Anne Mary Ellen “Nellie” (King) Elwood, and her loving husband of 38 years, Thomas Edward Miller. Survivors include her four children, Susan Kay (Matthew) Ghearing, Ralph Elwood Miller, Sally Ann (Rick) Fawley and Thomas Clark Miller. Joanne also leaves behind 11 beautiful grandchildren, 19 adorable great grandchildren, brother-in-law, Ralph Theodore (Kay) Miller, sister-in-law Mary Lou (David) Miller, many nieces, nephews and friends, and her neighbor, very special friend, and “go-to-guy”, Robert Nearing, who remained by her side during her final days. Although Joanne worked for a short time at Buick in Flint, Michigan, she was primarily a homemaker; taking pride in keeping her home clean and tidy, despite raising four rambunctious children. As a child and young adult, Joanne loved vacationing at the cottages her father painstakingly built on Lake Huron in East Tawas and Oscoda, Michigan. Later in her life she enjoyed being a “snow bird” at her condos in Destin, Florida Joanne was a lifetime avid reader, crossing many literary genres. She also enjoyed heated political discussions with friends and family. Although she relished the arts, including concerts, the theater, the ballet or visiting art galleries, her primary passion was shopping. Her home was a treasure trove of collectibles from tiny eclectic decorated boxes to tables of any shape or size to purses and shoes! We would like to believe she is now on an incredible shopping spree in the ultimate heavenly mall! Throughout her life she has been regarded by all who knew her as generous, kind, fun-loving, thoughtful, and devoted to those she loved and befriended. Because Joanne valued higher education, she donated her earthly body to the Anatomical Gift program at Wright State University. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at a later date. Our family gives thanks for the many kind and caring people at Hospice of Dayton who nurtured Joanne on her final journey.
