Jane Garlick May 19 2018

Jane Garlick, 90, died on May 19, 2018, surrounded by family and the gentle carers from Northern Illinois Hospice. A remembrance service in her honor will be held on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at Bethesda Evangelical Covenant Church, 2101 East State Street, Rockford, IL. Visitation is from 10 a.m. and the memorial service is at 11:00 a.m. Born in Missouri the third of three daughters, she married Dean Garlick of Des Moines, IA. As life partners, they celebrated 68 years of married life and devoted themselves to two daughters and their families. Jane is survived by her husband (Dean); two daughters; four grandsons; and two great-granddaughters. Of Rockford are Sara (Jay Hoskins) and their children, Daniel Hoskins (Brynn, and daughters Maddie and Emily) and David Hoskins. Another daughter and family members live out of the area. Throughout her life, she valued education. She attended Drake University (Des Moines, IA), Northern Illinois University (DeKalb, IL) and Rock Valley College (Rockford, IL). Articulate and well‐read, she was a life‐long learner. She actively pursued and shared her knowledge of history, science, current events, literature and art. During her work career, she held positions with local firms that specialized in engineering, accounting and marketing. Her home was the hub for dinners, holiday celebrations and other family events. Generously supportive of her children’s and grandchildren’s achievements, she and Dean celebrated graduations, engagements, weddings, birthdays, theatrical performances, recitals and concerts. They also enjoyed hosting musical evenings for family and friends. Jane played the piano and Dean sang tenor, while other musical family and friends played guitar, flute, violin, viola, saxophone, mandolin and trombone. She and Dean enjoyed traveling from coast‐to‐coast in the USA, Hawaii and Alaska. As a couple, they cruised the Caribbean, visiting many islands and South America. Also, they warmly welcomed to their home guests from Japan, Taiwan, Iceland, Hungary, Japan, Kenya, Madagascar, India and other distant lands. Proud of her Scots heritage, she and her daughter traveled extensively throughout Scotland, England and Wales. Gregarious and eclectic in service organizations, Jane was a member and an officer in the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), also serving on the scholarship and citizenship committees. She attended the DAR’s 100th anniversary celebration in Washington, D.C. For more than a decade, she served as director, program chair and moderator for the Fireside Shepherd Center, an educational organization for socially engaged and intellectually inquiring retired persons. She developed creative and stimulating programs that equally informed and entertained the membership. At her church, she was a member of a women’s circle and also taught youth Sunday school. Jane had an enduring interest in horticulture, including the propagation of decorative, edible and medicinal plants. Deeply appreciative of vivid color and rich diversity in the natural world, she enjoyed garden walks locally and in Virginia, Washington, D.C., Florida, the Japanese Tea Garden and San Francisco Botanical Garden, the Chicago Botanic Garden, the Chicago Flower & Garden Show, Kew Gardens (London) and many others. In her life roles as a daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother, she represented loyalty to and unity among her immediate and extended family. In her relationships, she integrated the values of honesty, diligence, kindness and respect for duty. Her love and support provided a strong foundation for her family and, before mindfulness became popular, she demonstrated that being present is essential. Her daily interactions, conversations and activities cummulated in a positive, constructive influence in the lives of her family and others. We rejoice in the life that she lived and in the countless ways that she enriched our lives. We will remember her with love.
