Obituary of James Long James Earl Long (Jim) 90 of Somers Point passed away May 17, 2018 at Shore Medical Center. Jim was born in Steelton, PA January 28, 1928 to Ruth (Donnally) & Jay Earl Long. He attended school in Steelton & graduated from Steelton High in June 1946. During his teen years he worked in the steel mills and also worked in a grocery during World War II dealing with ration cards. After graduating High School, he went to Gettysburg College and was a Science Major Jim graduated in 1950. He later earned a doctorate in Industrial Toxicology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1960. Jim worked for many well-known Pharmaceutical and Chemical Companies: Hoffman LaRoche; American Cyanamide; VP of Regulatory Affairs for 3 M in Minneapolis MN.; and the Canadian Ministry of Health. He also was the Past President of The American Industrial Hygiene Association. He also was a member of The American Legion Post #352 Somers Point and served as Adjuntant for many years. Jim is predeceased by his sister Donna Lee Bell. He is survived by his loving wife Mary – Anne Long, his sons Jim Long (Melissa Dolan), Charles Earl Long (Victoria), daughter Kimberley Bonanni (Ray). Nine grandchildren Morgan, Alyssa & Garrett Long, Abigail & Eleanor Long, and R.J., Angelo, Michael & Nico Bonanni. Jim loved people, interacting with his grandchildren teaching them about the ocean, seagulls, seashells, marine life and most importantly body surfing (which Jim did until the age of 88}. He will be greatly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him. When asked recently what a perfect day for him would be, he replied, “Sitting on the beach my toes in the sand, listening to the seagulls flying overhead, and watching the waves coming into the shore.” He was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by his family and those whose lives he touched during his time on earth. Many thanks to the nursing staff & aides at Shore Medical Center 2nd floor Telemetry Unit, Dr Yankovitch & his associate, Dr. Allen Silvey Dave & Susan (Dr. Silveys associates), Dr. Schreyer & Dr. Pandi. The family appreciates the caring, professional and courteous manner they treated my Jims. Contributions may be made in Jim’s name to St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Somers Point, The American Heart Association. Services will be announced at a later date.
