Gilbert Vieira, 81, of Taunton, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Thursday, May 31st, 2018. He was the beloved husband of Beatrice M. (Silvia) with whom he shared 33 years of marriage. Born in New Bedford, son of the late Joseph and Mary (Alvernaz) Vieira. Gilbert was a Vietnam veteran of both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps, and a recipient of the Good Conduct Medal. With a long career as an electrician, he retired in 1996 from the Paul A. Dever State School, where he was a Maintenance Foreman for 20 years. A longtime member of the Knights of Columbus McMahon Council #151, he was a past Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator. Besides his wife, Gilbert is survived by his children, Russell W. Vieira, Jeffrey Vieira and Lisa M. Proulx, all of New Bedford; step-children, Kenneth A. Menard of Taunton and Donna M. Mowry of Tiverton, RI; siblings, Frank Vieira and Norman Vieira, both of New Bedford and Lenora Dugan of Fall River; 9 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was also brother of the late James Vieira and Dennis Vieira. Following a private cremation, relatives and friends are invited to attend his committal service with Military Honors at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA on June 11th – time to be announced.
