Obituary for Esther McGhee Dateline: Alton Esther M. McGhee, age 89, went to her forever home with our Heavenly Father and her beloved husband Robert L. McGhee. Since the day, 4 years ago, that Grandpa Mac passed away she continued to say “I’m ready to be there and spend eternity with him”. She’s been ready, but selfishly we weren’t. We told her that she was needed here until God was ready. She graciously obliged. On June 1, 2018, 11:32 PM, surrounded by her 5 D’s, our Father took her home. Grandma Mac was ready. He had her castle built, scrambled eggs, coffee and creamer, pancakes, Miss Kitty, a robe, slippers, her twin brother, and her forever Joyce and McGhee families awaiting her arrival She attended Abundant Life Community Church in Alton and previously worked at Peter’s in Alton. We mourn her loss today and the days to come but also beam with elation that she is FINALLY with her husband. Grandma, our matriarch, was an Earthly angel here and had an unbreakable faith. Now we know with certainty that we have a true Guardian Angel that is with us day in and day out. Watch over us; your daughters, sons-in-laws, grandchildren and our families. We’re so blessed with the moments we got to cherish with you. Until we meet again, mom, Grandma Mac, MaMa Mac. She is survived by five daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah Walter of Brighton, Donna and Randy Hard of Alton, Denise and Tim Holden of Godfrey, Doreen and Randy Schnarr of Alton, and Danette and Jeffrey Whitehead of Alton; nine grandchildren, Ray Walter III, Brian Walter, Chris Hard, Katie Hard, Meghan Parker, Emilie Holden, Rachel Jones, Chase Gray, and Caleb Whitehead; many beloved great-grandchildren, two sisters, Margaret Gravemann of Alton and Ann McDaniels of Belleville. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by three sisters, Virgina Wells, Betty Ortbals and Frieda Ortbals, two brothers, Leon & Lester Joyce and a son-in-law, Ray Walter, Visitation will be from 4 pm to 7 pm Tuesday June 5, 2018 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be held at 10 am Wednesday June 6, 2018 with Rev. Mike Adams officiating. Burial will follow at Upper Alton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or Samaritan Purse.
