Obituary for Elizabeth Harriett Jones Gray Celebrating 101 Years of Life On Earth I WOULD RATHER BE A DOOR KEEPER IN THE HOUSE OF OUR LORD, THAN TO DWELL IN THE TENTS OF WICKEDNESS. (Psalm 84:10) ELIZABETH HARRIETT JONES GRAY, daughter of the late John Gray and Mary Settle was born in Philadelphia on April 27, 1917 and she quietly transitioned from her earthly home to the with her Lord on June 18, 2018. She received her education in Lanover and Atglen Public Schools in Pennsylvania. She moved to Baltimore at an early age and became a member of Gillis Memorial Community Church in the late 1940’s under the leadership of the late Reverend Theodore C. Jackson Sr. on Stockton Street. Elizabeth was a longtime member of the Senior Male and Female Usher Board for over 70 years. She also served on Pastor’s Aide, Trustee Board, Dr. Jackson Circle, Greeters, and was an honorary member of the Friendly Group. Elizabeth was a long time member of the Naomi Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. She served different offices in each group. On January 9, 1954, she married the late Robert Randall Jones, who departed this life on September 9, 1986. Elizabeth was a domestic worker and her last 12 years before retirement was a worker in the former Isaac Hamburgs Department Store on Charles and Fayette Streets. For a short time she worked as an Information Operator at C & P Telephone Company. She volunteered at Bons Secour Hospital and various other ogrganizations. He favorite scripture was 2nd Timothy 4:7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Her favorite hymns were: “May The Works I’ve Done Speak for Me”, “Going Up Yonder”, and “I won’t Complain”. Elizabeth was kind and would help whenever and wherever, gaining many firends during her life. Her favorite words were “Wait until I go to bed and get up before I say what I am going to do whatever the Lord says”. She was a Christian woman. She enjoyed all the many family gatherings and would always finish her plate and thank the cook for the good food. She would always say she could not eat another bite but would finish her meal and would ask for dessert. She was a truly faithful servant for God. Elizabeth was a faithful and dedicated member of the Usher’s board. Whenever she would come to church to usher she wanted to know if everybody was alright. She would ask if she could do anything. Elizabeth was caring and lovable. The President of the Usher Board, Ms. Culpepper would say that Mrs. Jones would show up and say “I am ready to usher”. Elizabeth loved doing the work of the Lord. She would always have a smile on her face and was a pleasure to be around. Sister Jones served under the leadership of the late Reverend Theodore C. Jackson Sr., the late Reverend Theodore C. Jackson Jr. and Reverend Darryl P. Gould Sr. She left a great legacy. She leaves to mourn her loss: a devoted daughter, Marian Redd; son-in-law, Lewis; two step-children, Mary Jenkins and Ronnie Jones; a beloved granddaughter, Lisa Toliver; beloved grandson, David Redd and wife Marlene; five beloved great-grandchildren, Julian, Jordan and Tristan Toliver, Aliya and Kamila Redd; three devoted nieces, Mary Ellen Gray and Charlotte Wilson of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Leather Woodbridge and husband Lesllie of Dallas, Texas; godsons, Gary Winder and wife Vivian, and Anthony Cox and wife Nyla Walters; great great niece, Dezlyn Carr and husband Omar; a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and special friends.
