Edmund Heinz Immergut 2018

Edmund H. Immergut March 23, 1928 – June 16, 2018 Edmund H. Immergut died unexpectedly June 16, 2018 in Portland due to injuries suffered from a fall. He was 90 years old. Ed’s profound curiosity and keen intellect enriched the lives of those around him until he died. Ed was born March 23, 1928 in Vienna, Austria. His family fled Austria from the Nazis in December 1938 and spent the war years in Shanghai, China. Ed came to the United States in 1946 when the Chinese Revolution broke out. He pursued a strong interest in science, first obtaining a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley in 1949 and then a PhD in Polymer Chemistry from the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. He met his beloved wife Brita, while they were both working as researchers in chemistry at the University of Uppsala, Sweden. After working as a post-doctoral fellow at MIT and as an adjunct professor at Brooklyn Polytechnic, Ed became involved in science publishing, serving as Editor and Head of John Wiley-Inter-science and Editor and Project Director of the Scientific American Illustrated Library. In 1980 he started his own publishing consultancy working for various science publishing houses. He was the Co-Editor of the Handbook of Polymer Chemistry and Managing Editor of the Encyclopedia of Applied Physics. Although he never completely retired from his work as a consulting editor, his relentless quest for knowledge inspired him to work as a volunteer translator for the Leo Baeck Institute, a research library devoted to German-Jewish history. In 2016, shortly after the death of Brita, his wife of over 58 years, Ed moved to the Mirabella retirement community in Portland, where he was very active and happy. He is survived by his daughters, Ellen, Eva and Karin; sons-in-law, Jens, Anders and Jim; and his grandchildren, Michael, Jessica, Kristina and Elsa. There will be a celebration of life gathering for friends and family at a date to be determined, at the Mirabella. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Leo Baeck Institute at: www.lbi.org To send flowers or a remembrance gift to the family of Edmund Immergut, please visit our Tribute Store.
