South Bend – Douglass A. McCartney of South Bend, Indiana passed away peacefully Monday, June 18, 2018. Douglass was born April 2, 1957 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Dougan and Rebecca Fry. At his birth, he was named Jay Dougan Fry. His mother passed away suddenly in his childhood and his father decided it was in Jay’s best interest to stay with Rebecca’s sister Margaret McCartney. Margaret later adopted Jay and he was renamed Douglass McCartney. Douglass grew up in Logansport, Indiana where he graduated from Logansport High School. Douglass moved to the South Bend area in the late 1980’s to complete nursing school and has resided here ever since. For 29 years, he worked as a registered nurse and retired from Trilogy Health Services in 2013. On November 24, 2000, Douglass was united in marriage to Rhonda (Reed) McCartney in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Douglass is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Rhonda; his sons, Joshua (Ericka) McCartney and Nathan Holmes and his three grandchildren, Bryce, Cameron and Jesse. Douglass also had two sisters, Myra and Rosalie; five brothers, Bud, Michael, Andrew, Eddie and Allen; sister-in-law, Wanda Shannon; god parents, Cosimo and Francis Cira and his god brother, Jim Cira. The family would like to thank the Staff of Trailpoint Village, Tracy Johnson, Aly and Theresa for your care in Douglass’s final days. Visitation hours will be from 4:00 – 7:00 pm Friday, June 22, 2018 at Palmer Funeral Home – River Park Chapel, South Bend, Indiana. A memorial service will be held at 7:00 pm Friday, June 22, 2018 at the Palmer Funeral Home – River Park Chapel with Chaplain Steve Nanny from Center for Hospice Care officiating.
