Helen Johnson Stock 2023

2023
Helen (Johnson) Stock, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2023, in Manchester, NH after a brief hospital stay. She was 87.
Helen was born in Glouceter, Mass on October 13, 1936 to loving parents Algot and Thelma Johnson. The oldest of three sisters she had many happy memories from her childhood. She enjoyed telling stories about living through World War II as a child, including buying butter (a rare event due to rationing) when she saw a line forming. She enjoyed sailing and was the girls’ New England champion rifle shooter in 1954.
She studied Chemical Engineering at MIT before leaving to start her family. Even though she was not able to complete her education, she was a life long learner and took a wide range of classes including German, illuminating engineering, navigation and library science. She always volunteered to go on field trips with her children, and later home schooled her youngest son, Peter, and granddaughter, Freja, and then her grandsons Michael, Alex and Ben. She continued to enjoy field trips, and especially enjoyed the Museum of Science in Boston, and Old Sturbridge Village.
Helen was active in Girl Scouts, leading troups in both Danvers, Mass and in Wolfeboro, NH. She especially enjoyed the leadership workshops above the treeline on the Presidential Range, took numerous troups camping, and inspired the girls to remember shut-ins over the holidays.
She was an avid driver, got her license as soon as she turned sixteen, and drove as long as her health permitted. She made countless trips out West and to Florida, and was able to drive through almost all the states, inclding Alaska. Her 1989 Volvo 245 had over 700,00 miles on it. She claimed to have gasoline in her veins, but did not like driving in snow.
She was also an avid cook, and enjoyed watching cooking shows on PBS. She was famous for her Christmas Eve smorgasbord, roast beef dinners, date pinwheel cookies, and sour cream chocolate cake. White bread was her nemesis, she was never able to bake a loaf of white bread that was up to her standard.
Helen lived in Wolfeboro most of her adult life, with periods in Montpelier, Vermont, Danvers, Mass and Portland, Maine. Wherever she was, she looked forward to returning to Wolfeboro.
She is survived by her daughter Susan Fitzgerald and husband Matt of Cumberland, Maine; son David Stock and wife Kathy of Wilton, NH; and daughter Carla Blouin of Manchester, NH. Her loving family includes grandchildrean Freja, Dave, Jen, Kenny, Michael, Derek, Alex, Joanna and Ben, and great-grandchildren Zoe, Marcus, Brooke, Elizabeth, Issac, Avonlea and Jack, neices and nephews, as well as others to whom she opened her heart and her home.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 3 PM at Faith Baptist Church, 53 North Mammoth Road, Manchester, NH. Interment of her ashes will be in the Spring.
