Mary Reba Hayhurst, 90, of Paris, Missouri, passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2023, at Monroe Manor Nursing Home in Paris.
Mary was born on November 29, 1932, in St. Joseph, Missouri, the daughter of Clarence William and Martha (Ball) Payne. She lived in her childhood home in Crescent, Missouri, with her “Aunt Polly” Pauline Kouns and Uncle Clarence Kouns. She graduated from Eureka High School and then attended the University of Missouri. She received her bachelor’s degree in Home Economics. Upon graduation, she moved to Paris, Missouri, to work for the University of Missouri Extension. There she met Owen “O.W.” Hayhurst and they were married on December 28, 1955, in Crescent, Missouri. He preceded her in death on November 2, 2006. Mary was a homemaker on the farm and later worked for Family Services for several years.
Mary, known to many as “Grandma Mary”, is survived by her children, three sons, John Hayhurst (Tammy) of Madison, Missouri, David (Straw) Hayhurst of Paris, Missouri, and Tommy Hayhurst of Hannibal; and her daughter Janet Armontrout (Jeff) of Centralia, Missouri; eight grandchildren, Hilary Crum (Richard), Talley Smith (Sam), Dalton Armontrout (Bethany), Mike Fountain (Kara), Justin Fountain (Jessica), Steven Hayhurst (Kaylee), August Hayhurst (Lexi), Benjamin Hayhurst (Caleigh); and seventeen great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband O.W., and Uncle Clarence Kouns and Aunt Pauline Kouns.
She was a member of the Homemaker’s Club in Paris and the Paris United Methodist Church. Mary enjoyed gardening and traveling with her husband, especially to Texas every year. While living on the farm, Mary looked forward to the annual eagle that would nest outside her home. She loved her family fiercely and spending time with her grandchildren. She insisted she had always been a “great grandma” when the great-grandchildren arrived. She regularly attended her grandchildren’s activities and later those of her great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 6, 2023, with Pastor John Grimmett officiating at the Agnew Funeral Home in Paris, MO. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Paris.
Memorials may be made to the Paris United Methodist Church or the Paris Senior Center.
