Walter W. Pickwell, 89, of West Street, Pittsfield, died Thursday, November 16, 2023, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born in Pittsfield on November 2, 1934, the son of Walter W. and Anna M. Herbst Pickwell, he was a 1954 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
He joined the Army in 1954 and served in Bamberg, Germany (1954-1956).
He joined Wohrle’s Foods, Inc., as a Meat Cutter and later a Salesman. He became President of Wohrle’s Foods in 1969 at John Wohrle’s death.
During his business career, he served in many business associations. He was president
Of the Eastern Meat Packers Association on the Board of Directors of the National Independent
Meat Packers.
He was a long-term member of the Hillcrest Hospital Board of Directors and also on the Berkshire Medical Center Board of Directors. He was a former member of the Pittsfield Exchange Club. He was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Dalton where he had served on the Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Pittsfield Country Club. He was President of the Alford Brook Club during their 50th Anniversary year.
He and his wife, Barbara (of 67 years) enjoyed many wonderful trips to the Caribbean, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, and traveling the United States National Parks. He and Barb spent many, many enjoyable floatboat rides on Onota Lake with many friends and family. His evening cruises always ended with singing “Day Is Done”.
Mr. Pickwell leaves his wife, his high school sweetheart, the former Barbara Wohrle, whom he married April 14, 1956.
He is also survived by a son, Jon Pickwell, of Pittsfield; a daughter, Lynn (husband Robert) Kessler of Pittsfield; five grandchildren, Luke (wife Becky) Kessler, Hannah Pickwell, (husband Ben), Weston (wife Emily) Kessler, Lee Pickwell, and Christian (wife Mei) Pickwell; a great-grandson, Mason Kessler, and great-granddaughter, Asa Kessler.
FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial Service for Walter W. Pickwell will be held Tuesday, November 21, at 11:00 a.m., at the First Congregational Church of Dalton. Burial will follow in the family plot at Pittsfield Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Monday, November 20, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME in PITTSFIELD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church of Dalton in care of Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
