Oren Wyatt Babb was born July 19, 1942 in Birmingham, Alabama to Mabon Spruill Babb and Connie Wyatt Babb. He graduated from Phillips High School in 1959; graduated from the University of Alabama in 1963; and Vanderbilt University Medical School in 1967. Oren completed an internship at Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, LA and a residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, TN. He served two years in the Public Health Service at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, MD. In 1973, Oren moved to Anniston, AL, with his wife Betsy and his two young sons, Rob and Russell. He was a partner with the Anniston Radiology Group for 27 years.
Several months after Betsy died in 2004, Oren asked Pat Goodgame to go to dinner with him. Pat had known Betsy and Oren since 1973 and been in the same Sunday school class with the Babbs. In 2005, Pat and Oren married. After Oren retired he became active in the Anniston Kiwanis Club and enjoyed traveling.
Oren and Pat moved permanently to their Birmingham condo in 2019, during the COVID pandemic. After the pandemic subsided, Oren had time to get reacquainted with friends from his high school and college days and enjoy many celebratory meals with family.
In 2022, he was diagnosed with stage 4 Glioblastoma. For 15 months, Oren was treated by the wonderful neuro-oncology staff at UAB. He had the best care possible, managed by Dr Burton Nabors and Dr James Markert and their medical teams.
Oren died peacefully at home on November 18, 2023 with Pat by his side. The family wants to thank his sitters Jackie Amos and Adrienne Stinson for their attentive care these last few months.
Everyone who knew Oren can attest to his good spirit and keen mind. He was appreciated by many. As one friend said “Oren was not real tall in statue but he was a giant of a man”.
Oren is survived by his wife, Pat Babb; sons, Robert (Gloria) Babb and Russell (Janna) Babb; sister, Glenda Bailey; stepchildren, Chris Goodgame, Meg (Matt) Gilpin, and Jeffrey (Mary) Goodgame; grandchildren, Karlyn (Patrick) Hale, Wyatt and Elijah Babb, Ethan, Everett and Elana Babb, Madison (Seth Diamond) Goodgame, Nicholas Goodgame, and Emma and Lily Gilpin; great-grandchildren, Oren Hale and Wylie Diamond; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Alden and Bruce Jacobus, Peggy and Clyde Giesenschlag and Rob and Nancy Foote.
A graveside service will be held in Anniston, AL at Highland Cemetery on Sunday, November 26 at 2:00 PM. A memorial service and columbarium committal will be held at Vestavia Hills Methodist Church, 2061 Kentucky Avenue, Vestavia Hills, AL on Monday, November 27 at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be the hour prior to the service. Reverend Butch Williams will officiate both services.
The family requests that anyone wishing to make a memorial, please make it to the Vestavia Hills Methodist Church, 2061 Kentucky Avenue, Vestavia Hills, AL 35216; the Anniston Kiwanis Club, www.annistonkiwanis.com; or a charity of your choice.
