Samuel “Sam” L. Widener, 85, of Bristol, VA passed away on Friday, December 16, 2022 in the Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, TN. He was born in Damascus, VA on October 28, 1937, a son of the late Paul Grant Widener and Iris Marie Widener. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Rebecca Jean Widener; a grandson, Joshua Widener; a step-grandson, Zachary Barton; a brother, Dean Widener; and a sister, June Cook. He had lived in Bristol, VA since 2012 and spent most of the winter months in Ocala, FL. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was retired from Columbus McKinnon Corporation. He was of the Baptist faith. Sam is survived by his wife, Amie Lou Widener; one son, Jeff Widener and his wife, Pam, of Kingsport, TN; a granddaughter, Nicole Widener; five step-children, Kathy O’Connor of Bristol, TN, Ray Viers and his wife, Sharlene, of Abingdon, VA, Diane Barton and her husband, Denton, of Vansant, VA, Sherry Sutherland and her husband, Denver, of Rosedale, VA, and Janet McGlothlin of Lebanon, VA; 10 step-grandchildren, 15 step-great grandchildren, and one step-great great grandchild; two brothers, Jerry Widener and his wife, Eula, of Damascus, VA and P.G. Widener of Damascus, VA; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm Thursday, December 22, 2022 at Garrett Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm Thursday, December 22, 2022, in the Riverview Chapel at Garrett Funeral Home with Pastor Tony French officiating. The committal service and interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus, VA with military graveside rites conducted by the U.S. Army National Guard and the Highlands Veterans Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be selected from family. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Penny F. Garrett Sarcoma Foundation, P.O. Box 832, Damascus, VA 24236.
