Avellino, 79, a resident of Beech Mountain, passed away on Wednesday, December 19, 2022. Born in Shamokin on October 5, 1943, he was a son of the late Alfred and Helen (Bubnis) Avellino. Following his 1961 graduation from of Our Lady of Lourdes Regional High School in Coal Township, Ron continued his education and became a certified X-Ray Technician, working at Shamokin State General Hospital and also at Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg. In 1964, he enlisted in the US Army and served in the Army Security Agency (ASA), stationed in Ethiopia, Africa; and Petaluma, CA. His last military duty assignment was in Vietnam from 1967-68. After his military service, Ron enlisted in the Pennsylvania State Police, and was first stationed in Holidaysburg and later in State College. While serving the PSP in State College, he became an airplane pilot and obtained several pilot ratings. Over time he transitioned into flying helicopters and was transferred by PSP to the Hazleton barracks, where he flew helicopters for 14 years. He retired from the State Police in 1992 after 25 years of service. While still working as a PSP pilot, Ron saw an opportunity in real estate and purchased a small apartment building in Hazleton. Soon his entrepreneurship expanded into establishing a laundromat in a local strip mall, and the purchase of additional apartment buildings. Over time, he acquired a commercial property to which he relocated and expanded his laundromat business and added a convenience store and tanning salon. After several successful years, he retired from his commercial ventures, but remained actively involved in the ownership and management of his rental properties. Ron was a life member of American Legion Post 0231 of Kulpmont; a member and past president of the Hazleton Rotary Club; and also a member of Rotary International. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his twin brother Alfred Avellino Jr. His disposition has been entrusted to the care of the Butler Chapel of Krapf & Hughes Funeral Homes and Crematory. No viewing or service is planned. His cremated remains will be privately interred next to his mother in the All Saints Cemetery at Elysburg.
