Obituary It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Ronald (Ronnie) L. King, 59 years old. Ronald was born at Tyndall AFB, Panama City, Florida on May 18th, 1963, and called home to Heaven on December 26, 2022. Born with Down Syndrome, Ronnie lead a very active life in Panama City and Marianna, Florida before losing his battle and succumbing to Dementia. He is preceded in death by his parents, Julius L. King and Thelma W. King of Callaway/Panama City Florida and nephew JR King of Crawfordville, Florida. He is survived by his brothers, Bob and (Francis) King of Millville, Florida, Eddie and (Julia) King of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, Victor and (Wynona) King of Callaway Florida; niece and nephews, Mike King, Ted King, Robert King, DeDe Wimmer and David King. After attending numerous special needs schools in Panama City and Okinawa, he was moved to Sunland Center, Agency for Persons with Disabilities, State of Florida in Marianna in the summer of 1985. Our family could not have been more fortunate to be blessed with a facility that offered so much for their clients to include a very friendly and professional staff at all levels. Throughout his years at Sunland, he was able to work numerous jobs on site to include the kitchen detail and recycling plant. He had options of either walking, riding his bike or being transferred by the staff to work, which he enjoyed. He also had teachers and vocational instructors that helped him learn at his level and perform basic everyday activities. He loved living at Sunland because of his many activities which he was able to perform independently and/or supervised as needed to include riding his bike for hours, putting a 300-piece puzzle together and going over to the leisure center to play video games and shoot pool with other clients. He also participated in Florida’s Special Olympics, where he won numerous ribbons. Because of Sunland’s great policies for their clients, our family was able to bring Ronnie home on overnight trips up to a total of 45 days a year which included taking him fishing, bowling, swimming, playing putt-putt golf, hanging Christmas decorations, working around the yard, having bar-b-ques and fish fries, which he loved doing all. He loved eating at Sonny’s BBQ and Oaks Restaurant in Marianna. During this time, he also was able to travel to New Mexico numerous times to visit with his brother and family. Taking Ronnie to New Mexico’s/Florida’s State Fair was fun for all, to include dancing at the “Spanish Village” for hours at a time. Our family would like to thank the entire staff throughout the years at Sunland Center for their professionalism, hard work and care for Ronnie. Every state should have a Sunland! A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, 247 N. Tyndall Parkway, Panama City, Florida. The family will reconvene at 1:30 p.m. for interment at Evergreen Memorial Gardens on Highway 231. Read more
