Donald McCandless, 74, of New Derry, passed away on Thursday, December 8, 2022 at Excela Health Latrobe Hospital. Born January 13, 1948 in Pittsburgh, he was a son of the late Ralph and Marjorie (Renfrew) McCandless. Don was a graduate of Freedom Area High School Class of 1966 and attended Bob Jones University until he was drafted into the United States Marine Corps. He served honorably during the Vietnam war until his discharge in 1975. Don was formerly employed at Schusters Building Components, Sony, and Elite Precast Construction in Florida. He was an avid Pirates, Steelers and Penguins fan as well as an avid University of North Carolina basketball and Penn State fan. He was a wonderful husband, father and brother. Don is survived by his wife, Debra L. (Waugaman) Thompson McCandless of New Derry; two daughters, Jennifer McCandless and Jessica Martin; two step-daughters, Cheyanne Thompson and Vanessa Thompson; two sisters, Linda Bauer (Gary) and Andrea Altenhof (Robert); four grandchildren, Courtney, Michael, Johnny and Anthony; three step-grandchildren, Peyton, Tyler and Raini Dae; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 pm Monday at the Lopatich-Brinker Funeral Home, LLC, 601 Weldon Street, Latrobe. Members of the Rolling Rock Detachment of the Marine Corps League will conduct a service at 3:30 pm Monday in the funeral home. A funeral service will be held at 4 pm Monday in the funeral home with the Rev. Corben Russell officiating. Private interment will be at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
