Obituary Philip O. Prout, Jr February 18, 1947 – November 27, 2022 Philip O. Prout, Jr. (75), “Sonny”, of Harwood, MD, died peacefully November 27, 2022, surrounded by family after a long battle with serious medical issues. Phil is remembered as kind and gentle with a knack for sharing funny stories from his voluminous knowledge of South County history and people. He was a good friend when needed and went out of his way to be helpful to all. Phil grew up on the family tobacco farm in Lothian, MD, and graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park. He was proudest of having been a member of the school’s Pershing Rifles Precision Drill Team. After graduation, Phil worked at area Giant Food stores in management before settling in personnel where he was responsible for local hiring. Later, he owned and operated the Bay Bridge Shell gas station. Besides accommodating heavy Ocean City weekend traffic, the station provided a gathering place for the neighborhood. He began a final career in sales at both Montgomery Ward Automotive, then Sears Automotive at the Westfield Annapolis Mall. Phil was known to his many repeat customers for fair and honest treatment. In retirement, Phil spent several years caring for his aging mother, helping other family members, and watching grandchildren. He took pride in planting the yearly summer garden, collecting miniature 1/16 toy tractors, sightseeing through most of Pennsylvania Dutch Amish country, and enjoying walks with his labradoodle, Rusty. Phil was preceded in death by his father, Philip O. Prout, Sr., and mother, Mary Elizabeth Prout. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 41 years, Vallorie; daughter, Jennifer Eyde; son, Michael Prout; brother, L. Stephen Prout and wife, Kimberly; as well as grandchildren, Eva and Charlie Eyde, and Tatiana, Adeline, Isabella, and Eleanor Richardson. Visitation will be on Sunday, December 4, 2022, from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm and there will also be a brief memorial service at 11 am on Monday, December 5, all at Hardesty Funeral Home, P.A., 905 Galesville Rd, Galesville MD.
