Paul David “Red” Carey, former Utica native and longtime resident of California, died at his home on July 9th, 2022, while under the care of his family and Hospice. Paul was educated locally, graduating from Our Lady of Lourdes Grammar School and UFA, class of 1953. He joined the Army and served in Europe during the Vietnam era. On his return home, he attended MVTI in New Hartford, graduating with a degree in Retail Business Management. Shortly after graduation, he packed up his skis and headed west, settling in California. He entered the business world as an assistant buyer at the May Company in downtown Los Angeles. Fast forward and he became a travel agent at Gardena Travel, a manager at Whittwood Travel Agency and then owner of Whittwood Travel. Paul and his wife, Lenore, owned and operated Whittwood Travel for over 35 years. He retired in 1996. Paul is survived by his wife, Lenore and a dynasty of four children and their respective spouses; 12 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and countless friends. Locally he leaves his sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Frank Viscosi of Oriskany, NY. Paul was predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Harriet Carey and brothers, Herbert Allen and Gregory Vincent Carey. Paul donated his body for the advancement of medical research. A celebration of Paul’s life was held at his home in California. He will be remembered in a Vigil Mass on Saturday, November 19, 2022, at Historic Old St. John’s Church, Utica.
