Michael W. McGarity, born May 27, 1946, passed away on Thursday August 18, 2022 (at the age of 76). Preceded in death by parents, James and Mary McGarity; brothers, James McGarity and Matthew McGarity; sister, Patrice McGarity. Survived by his wife of 38 years, Lauren (Tishkoff) McGarity; son, Trevor (Nicole) McGarity; daughters, Sarah A. McGarity (Matthew Smith), Mara D. McGarity; son, Maxwell A. McGarity; grandchildren, Connor Jacob and Mia Colleen McGarity; brothers, Thomas (Tracie) McGarity, William (Michelle) McGarity; sister, Mary Jo Wheeler; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Michael (“Mike”, “Dad”, “Dao”, “Big Mike”, “Whale”) grew up in Clintonville, of Columbus, Ohio. Mike attended Immaculate Conception and Bishop Watterson High School, where he was a record holding varsity athlete in football and basketball. Michael was a student of The Ohio State University and graduate of Franklin University. Mike dedicated his career to the newspaper industry, working for the Citizen Journal and the Columbus Dispatch for 44 years. Mike (Dad) was steadfast in teaching his children the correct and incorrect ways of tossing a newspaper, which created life lessons for his four children. Michael felt strongly about building community wherever he was and with whomever happened to be there. He was a long-time member of the Charity Newsies. He served as president in 2012 and board chairman in 2013. Mike was true to his value of “finish what you start” and “if you’re not going to do it right, don’t do it at all.” Mike (Whale) was a notable athlete and integral part of the two-time national championship touch football team, Black Forrest (aka: Hi-State Beverage). He was the first lineman inducted in the National Touch Football Hall of Fame. Whale loved Sunday basketball league with lifelong friends, followed by taking his kids from the basketball court to the pub. Thursday nights were dedicated to The Golf League. Michael had a deep appreciation and connection to music and the arts. Most of all, Michael loved his family! He never hesitated to hug, help, encourage and support his family and friends in any way he could. Mike (Dao) loved watching his grandchildren grow and explore their interests. He was grounded and sincere. Always dressed to the nines. His sense of humor was almost as great as his sweet tooth… “What’s for dessert?” Family and friends are invited to gather for remembrance beginning at 2:00pm on Thursday August 25, 2022, at The Boathouse, 679 W. Spring Street Columbus, Ohio 43215. The memorial service will be held from 5:00pm – 6:00pm.
