June 12 1944 December 25 2022
Mercedes “Menchie” Toledo, age 78, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, December 25, 2022, after a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. Affectionately known as “Nanay” to her children; “Yoya” to her grandchildren; and Menchie by her family and friends, she was born in Manila, Philippines, and was the fifth of seven children. She is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years, Dr. Antonio Toledo; her seven children: MaryAnn (Art Asuncion), Jesusa, Ronnie (Rachel), Vladimir (Glazell), Christina (Alexander Ainza, deceased son-in-law), Kiki, & JR (Leilanie); her eight grandchildren: Chanel, Chloe, Christian, Spencer, Aidan, Rafael, Ryan, & Ashley; and many more family & friends throughout the USA and Philippines. Prior to marriage, Mercedes was a student at the University of the East studying Commerce/Business. She then became a full-time homemaker, raising her children and supporting her husband’s medical career. In 1971, she and her four young children moved to the United States to join Antonio, who was completing his medical residency. Together, they planted roots in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and pursued their American dream, and eventually grew their family with three more children and eight grandchildren. She proudly instilled Filipino values of faith, family, culture, and traditions in all her children and grandchildren. Mercedes worked as a trained medication aide (TMA) at Willow’s/Walker Cityview and Walker Methodist, finally retiring after 30 years. She enjoyed all things Elvis and pop culture. Mercedes loved shopping, cooking, story-telling, fashion, music, travel, singing, and cheering for the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins. Later in life, her passion and legacy was the role of “Yoya” aka Lola/Grandma. She spent much of her time supporting her grandchildren, whom she treasured. She attended figure skating competitions, tennis matches, school concerts, birthdays, weddings, and family vacations. Mercedes lived a faith-centered life and taught her children and grandchildren to pray and trust God during difficult times. Mercedes only embodied selflessness, perseverance, beauty, love, grace, compassion, and kindness, a legacy she leaves to her children and grandchildren. Her family and friends loved her so much and will miss her dearly. “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid” (John 14:27). Special thanks to Hospice of the Midwest for their guidance and support. Due to the nature of our immunocompromised & physically challenged family members, we respectfully ask that you wear a mask.
