Obituary Please share a memory of Martha to include in a keepsake book for family and friends. View Tribute Book Martha Jane (Cory) Gregg passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 6, 2022 at the age of 96. She is survived by her four children: Cheryl James (Randy), Michael Gregg II (Camile), Rebecca Gregg, and Mark Gregg (Tammy) as well as her grandchildren, Jessica James-Leighton (Simon), Travis James (Brooke), Connor James (Kristen), Kristen Gregg (Rick), Michael Gregg III (Blake), and Lacey Mansfield (Will). Martha was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Dr. Michael A. Gregg. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Born in Barry, Illinois to James Cory and Maude (Buchanan) Cory, Martha lived on a small rural farm where she learned to work hard from an early age and developed her life-long love of animals. During World War II, Martha would rise early before school and plow fields only to return after school to finish her farm work. Following graduation from high school, she entered nurse training in Chicago, Illinois where she earned her diploma as a registered nurse. While there, she met the love of her life, Michael Gregg. She said of him, “I was smitten right away. I had never met anyone like him before.” Following their marriage, they moved to Alaska and then California where they built their lives together. Martha was never a “Hey-look-at-me” kind of person. She was more of a quietly supportive individual who always went the extra mile for others. She helped her husband build his medical practice in Santa Rosa, raised their four children, cherished their six grandchildren, and served others in her community. She supported her children’s activities to the extent that she even served as a president of Rincon Riders Horse Club and used her sewing skills to make a multitude of costumes for the Santa Rosa Rose Parade. Martha drove hundreds of miles pulling a horse trailer so that her children could participate in numerous horse shows. She also helped take care of animals for their many Future Farmers of America projects. Martha’s love of animals extended to adopting several dozen stray cats and 14 dogs in her lifetime. She was a talented horsewoman in her own right and was able to show her registered Quarter Horse, Rocky, at the by-invitation-only World Quarter Horse Congress in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Martha’s family members feel very blessed that she was able to remain in her own home until her death due to the excellent full-time care provided by her daughter, Rebecca, and the loving attention provided by her Fijian caregivers, Lote and Lenny. Martha epitomized the quiet servant who faithfully looked out for others. Her compassion, dedication, and selfless love will be sorely missed by those she left behind. A viewing for Martha will held from 10:00 – 11:30 am on December 16, 2022 at Daniels Chapel of the Roses. Private interment Santa Rosa Memorial Park.
