Obituary Irene Deone Welch Evans, age 90, of Jacksonville, Illinois died Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at Jacksonville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation, of Jacksonville. She was born July 16, 1932, in Fayette, IA, the daughter of the Rev. Dr. Virgil C. and Deone West Grenelle Welch. She married Dr. Robert John Evans on June 4, 1951, at First United Methodist Church in Lincoln, NE, and he preceded her in death September 8, 2015. Irene was a Jacksonville resident with Bob from 1966 to 1998 and 2002 to 2015. They celebrated 64 years of marriage together. Irene was a resident of Heritage Health cottages from 2002 to 2017, Cedarhurst from 2017 through 2019, and Jacksonville Skilled Care from 2020 until the time of her death. We thank each of these retirement communities for their love and care for Irene, as well as Gentiva Hospice, Home Instead, and helping friend Karen Blankenship. She is survived by two sons, Mark David John Evans (fiancée Amy Jordan), of Louisville, KY, and Rev. Scott Edward Robert Evans (wife Laura) of Doniphan, NE; two grandchildren, Matthew Sloane Theodore Evans of Kindred, ND (wife Dana) and Luke Lincoln Robert Evans of Omaha, NE; four great grandchildren, Levi, Evelyn, Felix, and Claudia Evans also of Kindred, ND. She has several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins. Preceding her in death are her husband, her parents, her brothers, Wesley James Welch, Robert Virgil Welch, and Rev. Dr. Claude Welch, and a daughter-in-law, Claudia Wilcox Evans. Mrs. Evans graduated in 1948 from Winfield High School, Winfield, KS, where she majored in music and won awards including a gold medal at KSHA state music contest in clarinet performance. At Nebraska Wesleyan University she earned a BA in history in 1955. Additional studies at various colleges/universities qualified her for an Illinois specialist, in K-14, in physical education teaching certificate. She was recognized as an expert synchronized swimmer, coaching, and participating in public performances in Kansas, Nebraska, and New Jersey. Her main focus in life was as a wife, mother, and grandmother. Her professional life included advertising design; calculator of stroboscopicphotoelectricdensitometer data for DuPont Photo Products, Parlin, NJ; teaching elementary and secondary classroom and/or P.E. She also enjoyed her work in sales, jewelry design, and a buyer for several stores. She won awards in drawing and painting. Starting in 1982 handbells and Choir chimes became a major interest as a group member, soloist, and director. Her solo performances included Dolly Parton’s Christmas Show at the Music Mansion Theater in Pigeon Forge, TN. Mrs. Evans was a member of the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers, The National Society of The Daughters of the American Revolution, Central Christian Church, and Centenary United Methodist Church. Visitation will be on Friday, January 6, 2023, at Central Christian Church at 2:00 PM prior to the worship service. Celebration of life services will follow at the church at 3:00 PM. A luncheon will follow at the church around 4:00 PM. Folks are welcome to stop and sign the guest book at any time from 2-5:00 PM (except during service.) Graveside services will be in Lebo, KS, on Monday, January 9 at 3:00 PM at Lincoln Cemetery in Lebo, Kansas. Memorials are to Central Christian Church Building Fund or Centenary United Methodist Church Building Fund or Medic Alert. The Williamson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
