Obituary Gene R. Hellmers, 94, of Berwick, died Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at his home. Born May 10, 1927 in Owego, NY, he was the son of the late John and Amanda (Hendrickson) Hellmers. During World War II, Mr. Hellmers served as a Seaman Second Class in the United States Navy and the Marines. After the War, he served in the Coast Guard. Throughout his life he was employed as a state police officer, sheriff, and police chief in Nichols, NY. In addition to working in the police force, he owned his own excavating business and he was a truck driver. He was a member of the Masons, the Elks, and the Eagles. Among his interests were trucks, diesel mechanics, racing with his sons, and NASCAR. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeanne Pachucki; and his half-sister, Beverly Stout. Surviving are his wife of 21 years, Beverly (Blank) Greenly Hellmers; two sons: Gary Hellmers and his wife, Barbara, of Apalachin, NY, and John Hellmers and his wife, Joanne, of Conklin, NY; his stepson, Greg Greenly and his wife, Cheryl, of Harrisburg, NC; two stepdaughters: Carol, wife of Donald Ariola of Poughkeepsie, NY, and Gina, wife of Karen Basile, Berwick, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A visitation will be held Friday, February 11, 2022 from 10-11 A.M. at the Mayo Funeral Home, Inc., 110 Chestnut Street, Berwick. There will be an additional visitation at Richards Funeral Home, 3670 Waverly Road, Owego, NY on Saturday, February 12, 2022 from 9:30-10 A.M. followed by a funeral service. Interment will be in Tioga Cemetery, Owego, NY. Donations can be made to St. Jude’s 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105, as of 2015. or Tunnel to Towers 2361 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10306.
