COLLINS, Rev. James J. – 83, entered into eternal life on September 11, 2022. Retired priest of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and professor at Holy Family University, Philadelphia. Father Jim taught at Roman Catholic High School for 10 years and Holy Family University for 37 years. He was also an adjunct professor at St. Charles Seminary for several years. He was the son of the late John and Marie (nee Hollenden); brother of the late John Roger, Jr. (Margaret Burns) and the late Charles Thomas (Patricia Irwin). Father Jim is survived by nieces, Stephanie Krupa, Valerie Corrado, Eileen Pugh and Trisha Jennings; nephews, Kevin, Paul, John, Michael and Brian Collins; many grand nieces and grand nephews; as well as dear and extended family members, Angelo Randazzo, the Stantons and the Vnucaks. Father Jim attended St. Callistus Parish School; St. Thomas More High School and St. Charles Seminary. He completed seminary studies at the Lateran University in Rome with a Master’s Degree in Theology. Father Jim was ordained in Rome on March 15, 1964 by Cardinal Luigi Traglia. He later earned his doctorate in Patristic Theology at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome in 1968. He authored four books on Dante and several articles for theological journals. He served in parish ministry at St. Paul, Immaculate Conception and St. Martha Churches, all in Philadelphia. He also served weekend and summer ministry at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Cape May and St. Agnes Chapel, Cape May Point for many years. Parishioners fondly remember weekday daily masses at St. Agnes followed by spirited bible discussion. Father enjoyed heavy duty gardening and landscaping which he put to good use at St. Agnes, where he installed the fountain, did many plantings and also designed the stain glass window above the entrance door. Father also enjoyed pastel painting, especially mosaics of ancient churches, Ravenna, Rome, Venice, Constantinople. If someone indicated an interest in one of his countless paintings, he handed it to them with joy. He had exhibits of his paintings at the Antique Door Knob in West Cape May. Father Jim is fondly remembered by many for his homilies interspersed with theology, biblical history, lives of saints, studying in Italy, encounters with St. Pope John 23rd the Patriarch of Constantinople, stories deep yet personal. A former student and lifelong friend had written: “Father Jim, you have been a central figure in my pilgrimage on this earth. I rose in the U.S. Foreign Service to serve as acting Consul General in Toronto after completing assignments in Dubai, Damascus, Casablanca and Beirut. I thank you for everything you helped me to become. You did it all with grace and humor. God Bless you.” Father Jim’s funeral took place on Thursday (Sept. 22nd). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Joseph Villa, 110 W. Wissahickon Ave., Flourtown PA 19031. (Spilker Funeral Home, Cape May) info and condolences:
