Obituary Ethel L. Kerschner of Drums, PA, a loving wife and wonderful mother, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2022. She had celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends at the Fritzingertown Senior Living Community on September 24, 2021. She was born to Lloyd and May (Callender) Wilson on September 24, 1921, in her home in the center of Drums. She graduated from Hazleton High School in the Class of 1938, and from Susquehanna College in the class of 1944 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music. For the next few years, Ethel taught music at several town schools throughout the valley. She married Richard H. Kerschner (Dick) in 1947 when he returned from Germany at the end of WWII. She helped Dick build their house in Drums less than a mile from the house she grew up in. They lived there for 65 years, raising three sons. Ethel pursued a career as a homemaker. She was a life-long member of the St Paul’s United Methodist Church in Drums and sang in the choir before volunteering as their organist and choir director for over 50 years. She helped establish the Greater Hazleton Concert Series that brought classical music performances to Hazleton High School Auditorium for decades and served as Campaign Chairperson. She gave private piano lessons and worked as a substitute teacher. Ethel was a deeply religious Christian who walked with Jesus daily, a belief and practice that guided her through life’s more challenging times and brought her much comfort. She was a wonderful, patient and considerate care-giver and, together with Dick, provided a wonderful home for their beloved developmentally disabled son Chucky who lived with them for 55 years. Her attention and care brightened both her mother May Wilson’s and her mother-in-law Pearl Kerschner’s lives during their later years. She also frequently visited elderly friends at the Sparr Convalescent Home, now Fritzingertown Senior Living Community. When she and Dick needed care, they chose to stay in Drums and moved there in 2008. After Dick passed in 2013, the attentive and loving staff became a second family for Ethel, who rewarded them with her gentle and cheerful disposition, laughter and loving smile. Ethel was predeceased by her parents and four siblings, her beloved husband, Richard (Dick), and her youngest son Charles (Chucky). She is survived by two sons, Gary L. Kerschner and his wife Linda of West Chester, PA and their children Alec Timothy and Anna Mylene Kerschner Rivera and her husband Paul, and Richard L. Kerschner and his wife Sally of Ferrisburgh, VT and their children Matthew Ryan and Elizabeth Kerschner Horne and her wife Maura and infant daughter Sage. A private family internment service will be held at the Drums Community Cemetery. A memorial service and celebration of Ethel’s life will be held in early summer at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Drums.
