June 1 1922 November 27 2022
Elizabeth ‘Libby’ Brittingham, age 100, died peacefully on Sunday, November 27, 2022, after a brief illness at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional in Salisbury, MD. Born on June 1, 1922 in Newark, MD, she was the daughter of Claude Strayer Dryden and Marlie Hastings Dryden. After graduating from Snow Hill High School, she attended State Teachers College (Salisbury University) before transferring to Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, earning her RN degree in 1944. Libby aspired to serve her country during WWII, so she enlisted in the Army Nurse Corp, serving on Okinawa and the Philippines for two years and was honorably discharged with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Libby met the love of her life, Grover Gorman Brittingham, Jr., after returning from overseas. Their 1948 marriage was the start of 69 years exemplifying a true Biblical Christian marriage through their love and devotion to each other all while growing their successful farm with poultry, truck crops, and grain. They were best known for their strawberries, establishing a ‘pick your own strawberry operation’ which became known as Strawberry Fields Forever. In addition to farming and raising her children, Libby was a devoted Christian and a lifelong dedicated member of the Powellville United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities. She was a member of the Friendship Homemakers, Wicomico County Farm Bureau, and the Wicomico Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #91. Her real joy in life was spending time with her family. She loved Christmas, hummingbirds, baking beautiful delicious pies and cakes, surrounding the farm with flowers, and growing vegetables. Libby was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Grover Gorman Brittingham, Jr. in 2017. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings: Helen D. Jones, Robert S. Dryden, George H. Dryden, and Claude B. Dryden. As a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and dear friend to many, Libby is survived by her three children and their spouses – David and Donna Brittingham of New Bern, NC, Cynthia (Cindy) and Jean Roger Buchen of Powellville, MD, Teresa (Terry) and Jack Applefeld of Paradise Valley, AZ; six grandchildren – Colin and Lauren Brittingham, Joy (John Wesley) Thompson, Timothy (Megan) Carey, Willard Applefeld, and Jessica (Hutton) Tignini; and three great grandchildren – Eden, Tess, and Knole Carey; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend their deepest heartfelt appreciation to her dutiful loving caregiver, Joanne Duguay. We would also like to acknowledge her faithful best friend of over 70 years, Doris Brittingham, and faithful friends, Andy and Sandy Bouma. The funeral service will be held at Holloway Funeral Home (Salisbury) on Thursday, December 15, 2022, at 11 AM, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastors Glenn T. Dryden and Cameron McDonough will officiate. Interment to follow at Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury, MD.
