Obituary Donald W. Birschbach, 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by his children on December 25, 2022 at the Hospice Home of Hope in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin after a lengthy battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Don was born August 14, 1932 to Frances and Olivia (Michels) Birschbach. Don married RoseMary Kohlmann on August 29, 1953 at St. Michels in Dotyville. She preceded him in death on March 31, 1979. Don then met Janice Halbach. They spent over 40 years together. Don was a dairy farmer from an early age. When Don retired from farming full-time, he continued working during planting and harvest seasons for Ed Montsma Farms. He was a volunteer fireman with the Lamartine Volunteer Fire Department for 55 years. He held the position of Assistant Fire Chief for 14 years. Don was a lifelong member of Our Risen Savior Church in Woodhull. Don loved to dance, especially polka. Don would often be seen on the dance floor and never missed a chance to polka. He enjoyed playing Sheepshead with his family and neighbors. Don loved spending time with his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. Every Sunday, Don had a family member (or several) visiting him. Don is survived by his partner, Janice Halbach; children Tom (Mary) Birschbach, Joe (Trisha) Birschbach, Shirley (Tim) Towne, Diane (Ken) Birschbach, Linda (Gary) Freund, JoAnn (Larry) Bille, Patty (Mary Kirsch) Birschbach; Janice’s daughter Denise (Loren Smith) Halbach; grandchildren Carla (Joshua) Marquardt, Gwyn (Kevin) Ditter, Kevin (Valerie) Birschbach, Christine (Garret Schoof) Birschbach, Pamela (Jeremy) Hilt, Kari (Justin) Winke, Sarah Freund, Cody (Ali) Birschbach, Tarah (Jason) Smith, Grant (Haley) Birschbach, Emily (Nate) Rens, Nate (Jenna) Bille; 30 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild; brother Lyle (Carol) Birschbach; sisters-in-law Janet Birschbach, Catherine Birschbach, Sharleen Birschbach, and Edith “Edie” Birschbach; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Eugene Kohlmann, Catherine (Gerald) Kulow, Dolores Kohlmann, AnnaMae (Delmar) Entringer; as well as many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife RoseMary; his parents Francis and Olivia (Michels) Birschbach; stepmother Frances Landreman-Birschbach; step-grandchild Kelly Henderson and the grandbabies resting at Calvary Lost Innocents including Amy and Matthew Freund; brothers Charles, Melvin, Franklin, Kenneth, Harold, Stanley and infant brother Joseph Birschbach; sisters-in-law Margaret, Betty, Margaret, Karen and Linda Birschbach; stepsister Jane (Joe) Losh; stepbrothers Jerome (Madeline) Landreman and Robert (Phyllis, Helen) Landreman; father and mother-in-law August and Anna Kohlmann; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Ambrose Kohlmann, Dorothy Ann Kohlmann, Joseph (Mary) Kohlman, and Alfred Kohlmann. Don’s family invites friends and relatives to a time of visitation on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM at Zacherl Funeral Home. Visitation will continue on Friday, December 30, 2022 at Our Risen Savior Church in Woodhull at 10:00 AM until 10:45 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on December 30, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Our Risen Savior Church in Woodhull following the visitation. Cremation will take place after Mass and private burial of cremains will take place at St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Woodhull. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to SSM Hospice or the Lamartine Fire Department. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to SSM Home Health and SSM Hospice Home for the wonderful care Dad received over the last months.
