Daniel Steven Smith (12/17/1960 – 11/22/2022) formerly of Grand Rapids, Michigan, age 61, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes at his home in Los Angeles, California Tuesday, November 22, 2022. Dan was born to Douglas and Margie Smith in Grand Rapids, Michigan on December 17, 1960 at Blodgett Hospital. Dan was raised in the north end of Grand Rapids and graduated from Creston High School in 1979. Not long after graduation Dan moved out to California to follow his love of adventure. Dan fell in love with his California home, the fast pace, weather, and people. Whenever Dan came home to visit Michigan, his love for his family, old friends and home state was apparent. Dan was a beloved son, brother, dearly loved Uncle and nephew and a knowledgeable University of Michigan fan. Dan worked in the hospitality and food industry, including fine dining in several landmark establishments in both Hollywood and the Los Angeles areas. Dan lived his life passionately, enthusiastically, and so loved life. He will be dearly missed by his surviving family: his mother, Margie Smith; brother, Greg Smith; sister, Melinda (Jim) Larva; nephew and nieces, Tyler (Lisa) Plew, Jenna Plew, Haley Smith, Ryan (Gabi) Smith, Mason Larva, Kalyn Larva, Abbey (Joel) Siegel, and Ashley (Jessica) Denver; uncles, Phil (Kathy) Smith, Bill Houtman, Bob (Carolyn) Houtman and Jim Houtman, along with several grand nephews and nieces, and his special lifelong friends. Dan was preceded in death by his father, Doug Smith and brother, Mike Smith. Dan’s Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, March 25, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Pederson Funeral Home, 127 N. Monroe St., Rockford, MI 49341. A visitation will be held Saturday from 1:00 p.m until time of service.
